A Letter to my younger self

It took me approximately 24 years to realize that communication is the most important thing between everyone. I’ve been privileged enough to experience a few things in life. Some of which are great and some are not so great. But I am thankful. This week, I’ve decided to write a letter to my younger self. Don’t you wish you could go back and whisper a few things to your younger self? I don’t believe in regret for I know every situation is a lesson plan. However, if I knew what I know now back then, I know i’d be further. But I’ve learned that one’s life unfolds in proportion to his or her courage. Therefore, it’s a process.
Dear younger self,
It wasn’t too long ago you stepped foot into this new land. It seemed scary, too big to grasp and too foreign to understand yet you took on the challenge. The challenge of adapting to a melting pot. A new place you were forced to call home knowing deep down inside it will never be home. Your complexity was and still is too much for them to comprehend- Island made, City raised. You are the epitome of perfection. From the texture of your kinky hair to the melanin of your perfect skin you create magic.
When I look at you today, I realized that you were handpicked for this journey. The only problem is, you don’t know it. It won’t be easy but you will make it through. You will have to push through expectations, embarrassments, heartbreaks, subcategory of a minority, but you will make it. Your drive, and ambition shall be your wings. I advise you to find your passion. When you do, give it your all. I beg you to cherish time for tomorrow is not promised. Cherish your parents, tell them you love them everyday. Find your definition of happiness and do whatever it is that gives you that satisfaction. Ignore everyone, especially those who have nothing good to say. Be ready to be judged, be content with your rate of growth- every step causes growth. Read ten pages a day and write one. Start your 401K with your first job. Invest in something at 18 years old, be consistent. Travel as far as you can. Don’t depend on anyone. Be very careful who you trust but love everyone.
You are a brilliant girl with a promising future. You have an energy level that matches your motivation. Don’t be afraid to be bold. Your mind map is so unique, no one else can dare to walk a mile in your shoe. Keep going it gets better.
I love you,
Your Older Self
