The Vagina dialogue: Gynecologic cancer awareness month

The vagina, pookie, pumpum, pussy, pussycat, lotus, flower, whatever you decide to call it, I’d like to talk about it today. YES, you heard me right. I’m talking about the gold between your legs. For those of you who don’t know, September is Gynecologic cancer awareness month. If you’ve had your annual check up this month- Bravo. If you haven’t, it’s never too late. I encourage you to get your annual  exam before the year ends. I’ve been told that one of the  main reasons why we shy away from talking about the vagina is because we think it’s an uncomfortable subject. Therefore, today I challenge you to step out of that comfort zone and join me as I get into “THE VAGINA”.

The facts:

Your vagina is a muscular canal. It is not your Uterus, Pelvic, or Ovaries.

At the front of the vagina locates the prepuce and right beneath the prepuce is the clitoris.

The clitoris is highly sensitive and houses approximately 8,000 nerve fibers (this is the part that gets swollen with blood during sexual stimulation).

The clitoris is also where cancer (vulva cancer to be exact) starts.

Research:
A few months ago I picked up a book titled Sacred Woman by Queen Afua. For those of you who’ve read my blog on Great Books to Read know that I’ve mentioned this book before as one of my favorites. Personally, I think every woman should read this book. Why Dash? Well, because it’s loaded with information that will help you understand your body, soul and spirit.

Woman to woman: Have you ever examined your vagina? I’m talking about laying flat on your back and spreading your legs apart while using a mirror to see it in all its glory! When I say examine, I mean paying close attention to: size, color, how it’s breathing, how it feels, and smell. These are all things you should know about your vagina. This might be a bit uncomfortable for some of you, but it’s important to know your body inside out. Also, these are some questions your Gynecologist might ask. I suggest you get used to it. Think of it like this,  if you know the norm, you can detect the abnormal. It’s not wise to treat your vagina as a separate part of you. In other words, don’t just clean it when you take a shower. Spend time with it. IT IS YOU! it’s your energy, it’s your power. Really, get to know it.

Care tips:

Every woman is different which means every vagina is different. I can’t draft a special care package and expect it to work for everyone. However, there are some tips that can be beneficial to all of us. If you’re already familiar with these, consider this a reminder.

  1. The beauty of the vagina is that it cleanses itself naturally in the form of normal, vaginal discharge. Therefore, try to avoid douches or steams  unless prescribed by your physician. Using these products can upset the natural balance of organisms.

  2. Wash new garments before wearing them

  3. Wash undergarment separately from regular clothes

  4. Wear 100% cotton.

  5. Use warm water to wash the vulva and dry thoroughly

  6. Practice safe sex

  7. Avoid oral sex with anyone who suffers from Periodontal disease.

  8. Get your annual check up by your Gynecologist

Okay ladies, this is the part I normally say comment below and subscribe. This time I'll say feel free to email or DM me with your comments for the sake of your privacy. I would love to hear about your Gynecology visit; past or present.
